Wren

“By the gods, I’m the luckiest male in the world.”

I glance over my shoulder to find Tag leaning against the doorframe of the bedroom suite I converted into a dressing room.

He included a stipend for clothing and accessories in our agreement when I told him I wasn’t able to bring my gowns and such from the Brickell condo. And I’m glad he did since tonight we attend the most important gala on the Miami social calendar. Plus, it’s our first engagement as a couple and I’ll meet Jagger and Sage as Tag’s girlfriend. With Byrd Capital as a sponsor, George and Gretchen will be in attendance. Jonathan will probably show up, not wanting to miss an opportunity for networking.

Butterflies flutter in my belly.

I place a palm on it atop the silver sequined stretch-tulle gown. I’m glad Tag likes it. It makes me feel sexy. Although strapless, boning in the fitted bodice offers support for my ample bosom. From the fitted and draped waist, the gown falls loosely at the hip to pool on the floor. My leg plays peekaboo through the thigh-high slit. Strappy stilettos lengthen my leg and add height to my petite frame.

“Don’t be nervous. You look gorgeous.”

Silent like a predator, Tag slipped behind me. His arms encircle my waist, placing his hands over mine. He stares at me through the reflection in the full-length mirror.

I lean into his body, drawing from his strength.

“Thank you. I must say, you wear a mean tux, Mr. Dahl. So debonair!”

He smirks.

“Thank you, Ms. Byrd,” he responds, then kisses the crown of my head and steps back. “However, you’re missing something.”

My eyebrows knit together as I face him.

His eyes sparkle like the jewel they resemble as he bites his lush lower lip. He reaches for a shopping bag next to his black patent leather dress shoe.

I recognize the gold logo for an Italian jewelry atelier.

He withdraws a large flat box and holds it out to me. I glance up at him. He cocks an eyebrow. My fingertip presses the gold closure. The lid lifts to reveal a ruby and diamond suite. I gasp at the magnificent matching brooch, earrings, necklace, and bracelet. The flawless gemstones sparkle like fire and ice.

“Rubies signify love, commitment, passion, protection, and wealth. All that I offer you along with my heart forever, My Sweet Girl.”

Tears blur my vision.

Tag sets the box on the center island and sweeps me into his arms. He buries his face in my hair and inhales deeply, then murmurs words of love. I clutch him tightly. He holds me until I calm.

“Come, let’s rinse your face.”

I nod and let him lead me to the en suite bathroom. He puts a towel over my gown and moistens a washcloth with cool water. Carefully, he dabs my face. Fortunately, I always wear waterproof mascara. The rest of my makeup I fix quickly. He stands by and smiles encouragingly.

When I’m done, he takes my hand again. He puts the necklace on me while I slip the earrings and bracelet on.
